CHAPTER 46

As the afternoon dragged along, the highlight was Nancy stopping by with her double stroller carrying Andrew and Amy. They were adorable and growing up so fast. Andrew was fair and favored Nancy’s beauty while Amy definitely favored Richard’s side of the family. Nancy had just come from visiting Sue and got to see baby Eli for the first time. Nancy commented about how the three children would probably go to the same school and play together and how wonderful that would be.

Nancy was ready to give another report as well. “When I got out of my car just now, Julia saw me and gave me a tour of her new shop. It is so cute and quite artistic. She has added so many personal touches! I think she’s onto something, Anne. Sarah was as busy as can be unpacking merchandise. The two of them are beyond excited about it all.”

“I know what you mean. It’s so cool that they are sharing this together. Jim is even lending them a hand, which is really amazing. Knowing Aunt Julia, I thought she’d be determined to do it all herself.”

“Well, is he seeing anyone?” Nancy fished for any recent relationship details.

“No, I don’t think so, but I don’t think they will ever get back together again. She is way too happy now!” We both had to laugh.

The twins entertained all of us for a while as we acted silly and talked baby talk. Nancy told us that she gave Sue time off work with full pay as a means of helping her financially. I knew that was huge for Sue, who was always worried about making ends meet. I knew all of her savings and investments went to travel expenses for the adoptions.

By late afternoon, the orders were caught up and Kevin had returned from his last delivery. I was struggling on the computer trying to make some changes to our website. My frustration over mastering technology continued to plague me. Except for Kevin, the staff had gone and the front door was locked. I called Kevin in to help me on the computer. It was a piece of cake for him and, to his credit, he always had patience when I asked him questions about the computer. He took over my seat and knew exactly what needed to be changed.

The shop line kept ringing instead of going to voice mail, so I left Kevin to go to the phone by the front counter. I picked it up and answered in our usual shop fashion. “Brown’s Botanicals. How can I help you?” I said, feeling somewhat frustrated.

“Mrs. Dickson, is that you?” asked an unfamiliar voice.

“Yes, who is this?”

“This is Cora Blessing from your husband’s office,” she began. “We haven’t met, but I have some alarming news to tell you.”

My heart stopped.

“We have just sent your husband away in an ambulance to St. Joseph Hospital. He didn’t show up for our meeting at four and didn’t answer his phone, so I went to his office to check on him.
